Identity Withheld

I’m happy to announce that my latest novel, Identity Withheld, is now available as a pre-order, with a launch date of October 15. It is $1.99 during the pre-order period, after which it moves to $4.99. For the time being, only Kobo offers the preview feature.

AFTER A LIFETIME OF RUNNING FROM A MYSTERIOUS PAST, CLEO MUST NOW CONFRONT SECRETS THAT MIGHT KILL HER.

Kobo | Barnes and Noble | Apple | Amazon

Fredericton, New Brunswick: The sleepy town in Atlantic Canada is only the latest stop for Cleo Brennan’s nomad parents.

But Cleo’s tired of drifting from town to town. At 23, she wants a permanent home. She plans to settle in Vancouver once she finishes university. Let her parents keep wandering if they want. She’s done.

While she’s long suspected that her parents are running from something—or someone—suspicion only becomes fact when someone rams her parents’ car into the Saint John River.

Now Cleo must discover the identity of the shadowy individual threatening her parents’ lives… all while keeping an inquisitive detective at bay.

Then someone attacks Cleo and she must figure out, finally, what sent her parents running so long ago—before those behind the secret kill her.

Readers who enjoy strong characters who overcome overwhelming odds will love Cleo’s story.  Don’t miss out on Identity Withheld, a standalone novel by the author of the Mendenhall Mystery series.

Getting Justice Storybundle

I’m thrilled to report that my “women’s thriller” novel, Shelter, is featured in the Getting Justice Storybundle for the next three weeks. I’m in excellent company, with seven other novels plus two short story collections, all featuring mysteries that deal with justice. Here’s what Curator Dean Smith has to say, in part, about the bundle:

JUSTICE: A GREAT WORD: by Dean Wesley Smith

I learned that if you ask a writer for a story about justice, you get all kinds of books and genres. But mostly when you say the word “Justice” you get mystery and crime fiction.

And that was fine by me. To be honest, that’s what I thought of when I started putting together a bundle of books with the theme “Getting Justice.”

Turns out the concept of justice isn’t so easy to define. I know, I ended up looking it up. The most common term in the many definitions is “fair.” For example, the best definition in my mind for the idea of justice is “the quality of being just, impartial, or fair…”

But when you add the word “Getting” in front of the word “Justice” it brings up an entirely different form of story.

For StoryBundle, you decide what price you want to pay. For $5 (or more, if you’re feeling generous), you’ll get the basic bundle of four books in any ebook format—WORLDWIDE.

  • Unexpected Good Guys by Annie Reed
  • Independent by Means of Magic by Kari Kilgore
  • Shelter by Marcelle Dubé
  • Justice by Fiction River

If you pay at least the bonus price of just $15, you get all four of the regular books, plus six more books, for a total of 10!

  • The Meter’s Always Running by C.A. Rowland
  • Help Me Nora by Diana Deverell
  • Beyond the Grave by R.W. Wallace
  • Death by Polka by Robert Jeschonek
  • Ace High by Dean Wesley Smith
  • Street Justice by Kris Nelscott

This bundle is available only for a limited time via http://www.storybundle.com. It allows easy reading on computers, smartphones, and tablets as well as Kindle and other ereaders via file transfer, email, and other methods. You get multiple DRM-free formats (epub, mobi) for all books!

Night Shift: A Mystery Collection

Night Shift collection-ebook coverMy first short story collection! Night Shift: A Mystery Collection features four of my mystery shorts, including two Mendenhall short mysteries, and one novelette, compiled for the first time. Of course, the stories are all still available separately. Here’s the list:

Night Shift: Driving back to Mendenhall late at night during a thunderstorm, Chief of Police Kate Williams stops to check out an accident only to find herself fighting for her life. A Mendenhall Short Mystery.

Lincoln City Blues: When a beautiful woman walks into the office of Anastasia Charles—aka Charlie—with a story about a violent husband and a kidnapped kid, Charlie’s private investigator instincts sit up and pay attention. With two grand on her desk, eight more when she finds the husband and the chance to be a hero and rescue a kid… how can Charlie say no?

The Priest: Chief of Police Kate Williams is a little irritated when Constable Trepalli calls her into a routine investigation of a break-in at the priest’s house. Then Trepalli shows her what they found on the priest’s bed. A Mendenhall Short Mystery.

Leduc: Leduc knows how not to get noticed, how to bide his time, how to hide what he does. He learned a long time ago, after his mother found the cats. Just a few more weeks, and he’ll have his military police badge. Then he’ll be able to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants… to whomever he wants.

There’s only one problem. Someone knows his secret.

Jules: A fall off a cliff, a nighttime attack… Is Jules imagining it, or did someone follow her to the Yukon from Colombia to finally finish her off?

Ghosts of Morocco now available!

Ghosts of Morocco is now up! It’s available as an ebook everywhere ebooks are sold, and will be available as a trade paperback in a couple of weeks. This one’s a bit of a departure for me — all my mystery novels in the past five years have been set in the Mendenhall world. This one is set in Morocco and the Yukon, and is not part of a series.

Morocco-POD cover_FINAL

Here’s the back cover blurb, in case you don’t have a magnifying glass:

Fifteen years after a traumatic event in Morocco, Hope Adler has reinvented herself as a cautious, dependable businesswoman back home in Canada. No more impulsiveness. No more risks. No more Wild Child. But when Meddur, the young son of her Moroccan friend, lands on her doorstep, running from murderous Berber radicals, she must reach deep into her past and bring back the Wild Child, because that’s the only way she and Meddur will get out of this alive.

Just as she thinks she’s found a safe place to hide the boy, Sam Walker, the bane of her youth in Morocco, suddenly appears. Can she trust him to help her keep Meddur safe? Or is he working with the radicals?

In a departure from her Mendenhall Mysteries series, Marcelle Dubé’s Ghosts of Morocco is a standalone novel featuring Hope Adler, a woman tormented by her past and willing to do anything to make amends. Ghosts of Morocco is a wild, exotic ride from the sands of Morocco to the deep snows of the Yukon.

Obeah now in print

Obeah-ebook cover-DEC 31I’m very pleased to announce that Obeah, my fantasy novel set in the Yukon, is now available as a trade paperback. Here’s the write-up:

On a near-future Earth decimated by plagues, two species of humanity survive—Homo sapiens and Homo gaians. When an insane gaians blames sapiens for the world’s problems, only Lauren Tom will stand between him and the destruction of the remaining sapiens.

Unless she decides he’s right.

* * *

Lauren Tom doesn’t need anyone, thank you very much. She survived the Troubles that killed her father, survived her mother’s disappearance ten years ago, and now she survives just fine in a cabin in the Yukon wilderness.

At 21, she’s the best trapper and fisher in the area. But while her neighbors appreciate her generosity, they don’t warm to her. They never have. She doesn’t belong. She’s too different, too odd, too restless. She makes people uneasy.

Then Cade, a strange, charismatic man who once lived in Whitehorse returns. He wants her to come with him to the fabled Ben-My-Chree, a place deep in the wilderness that calls to her like a siren’s song.

His return sets in motion a chain of disastrous events that will change Lauren’s life forever—and may result in the destruction of the world’s remaining humans.

Obeah is available everywhere books are sold, including Mac’s Fireweed in Whitehorse.
